| "My mom had a particular superstition that I have sort of continued as a way to remember her (she died a year before my oldest son was born). She sewed/tied red thread into my clothes as a baby, into my wedding dress, etc. This was to ward off the evil eye. So when I was expecting both my sons I tied a red ribbon onto the crib frame and sewed red ribbon into their going home outfits. I also made my husband tie a red thread around my hospital ID bracelet when I was in the hospital to deliver the boys. Kinda different, eh? But it reminds me and connects me with my mom." |

Other Protections Against Demons & the Evil Eye* Jonathan-- "My mother should sleep with a book of Psalms under her pillow; wear something blue and/or wear a 'hamsa' pendant. This is for protection against the evil eye." |

Joshua-- "While not the best scan, this is a great amulet I picked up recently in hopes of having one during my wife's pregnancy. The most interesting part of the amulet is in the center where it says "Shaddai Kera Satan" (God who rends Satan) and under each of these words are the names of the 3 angels who can bind Lilith from being able to cause any harm during a pregnancy. There are also blessings for children, reminders of God's mercy surrounding the pious, etc. The rooster in the middle is still a bit of a mystery (I need to do some more research on it!)" |

Jan-- "The Shir Lamallot card is a copy of the Psalm (121) These cards are given out by the Lubavitcher community to all pregnant women to take to the labor room with them. It is put somewhere in the room while the woman is in labor, but not in plain view as it contains G-d's holy name. It is considered a protection for the mother and baby. After the birth, the one card is put into the baby's crib as protection. and another is put in the mother's room. I have heard that some hospitals have them inside other pictures hanging on the wall of the labor room so they are hidden from view, but still in the room. I kept these cards and have them in the rooms where my children sleep. When my second daughter was desperatley sick and hospitalized, I took her shir lamallot card with me to the hospital and put it in her crib. |
"The Psalm is absolutely beautiful and goes like
